SET ASIDE
These fields are left after harvest until at least the beginning of May when Roundup can be sprayed to kill off any weed growth.
Or at the beginning of July the field can be cultivated. BEWARE this can leave the field very rough with large clods of hard soil.
Some set aside fields are following  late harvested root crops  and will be VERY rough with deep wheel marks  which will break your glider.

Most set aside fields will be reasonably smooth following the last cereal crop

Early August

1000-1500ft
Surface
Many set aside fields have now been cultivated.
The aerial shot has 3 freshly cultivated fields in the centre and 2 uncultivated fields in the lower left.
The ground based shot shows a smooth field but it is very soft and would definitely result in a 'carry out'.
The resulting surface may vary from smooth and firm to large rock hard lumps up to 30cm across.
Beware brown fields as you will be unable to tell from circuit height just how smooth the surface is.
A better choice would be a cut cereal field if available.

Late June
1000-1500ft
Surface
Little change expected until the fields are cultivated prior to next crop -  this will start at the beginning of July.
Short enough to land in  at around 25cm high
Note the odd tall dead weed and characteristic uneven vegetation.
Most Setaside land has now be sprayed off with a total weedkiller (Roundup) and much of it has lost the reddish colour characteristic of Roundup as per the ground image.

Mid June

Surface
Little change expected until the fields are cultivated prior to next crop in 3-4 weeks time.
Short enough to land in  at around 25cm high

The airborne image here shows two separate types of set aside land. The left hand two fields are simply left after late harvested sugar beet and will be very rough surfaces but the give away is the vegetation is green and tall whereas the smaller field on the right of the image is sprayed wish roundup and is much shorter growth and will be more likely to be smooth( if you land along the wheel marks rather than across them)
